A former beauty journalist for Vogue and M, Le Monde’s magazine, Lili Barbery-Coulon now devotes herself entirely to her eponymous blog, which she created seven years ago: lilibarbery.com. With Pimp My Breakfast, her first book dedicated to breakfast, about to be published by Editions Marabout, this yoga enthusiast shares the secrets of her beauty routine.
Her beauty "must-have"
Cleansing every evening! Although micellar waters are handy when you’re short on time, I really believe in the benefits of double cleansing with milk. My skin guru, Joëlle Ciocco, taught me how to cleanse my face properly in the early 2000s. I thought a cotton pad with a little cleansing milk or make-up remover was enough. She showed me how to use her Rich Cleansing Milk by massaging it in with my fingertips, rinsing, then following with a cotton pad soaked in her Milky Lotion. I’ve never stopped using this duo. When I’ve worn sunscreen during the day, I swap the Rich Cleansing Milk for the Emulsifying Cream, which is more effective at removing sunscreen filters. I keep trying new cleansers because I believe a good cleanser does far more for the skin than a very expensive anti-wrinkle cream. Among my recent discoveries, I loved the Cleansing Emulsion by Oh My Cream Skincare: the texture, the scent, the formula, the price — I think it all works beautifully. I like to finish this cleansing ritual with a spritz of Hydrating Floral Essence by Tata Harper; it smells so good!
Her morning routine
I like to wake up my skin with a water rich in active ingredients that won’t irritate it, like Cellular Water by Esthederm. I blot it with a tissue and apply a serum. At the moment, I’m using EGF Serum by Bioeffect, an Icelandic brand that’s highly effective at slowing skin ageing. Then I moisturise. I’m flying a lot at the moment, so I alternate between Rich Cream by Tata Harper, which lives up to its name, Egyptian Magic Balm for its simplicity and versatility, and Moisturising Lotion by La Mer on days when I need a lighter texture. I don’t wear much make-up: I like multitasking products such as Volumizing Lip and Cheek Tint by Tata Harper or Lip2Cheek by RMS Beauty, which give cheeks and lips a natural flush of colour.
Her evening ritual
It depends on my day and what my skin needs. Cleansing is non-negotiable for me. If I’ve spent the day in the sun or cold, I use Precious Cerate by Joëlle Ciocco, a luxurious, do-it-all balm: I put it everywhere, even on my lips and around my eyes. If my skin looks dehydrated, I choose Intensive Hyaluronic Concentrated Formula Mask by Esthederm or Moisturising Overnight Mask by Tata Harper. If I have dark circles, I apply the EGF Eye Mask by Bioeffect. And if my skin looks great, I leave it bare.
Her obsession
My hair! It’s fine, limp and tends to get greasy easily. So I bring out the big guns. I’ve tried everything! The products that have proved their worth are the rose range by Christophe Robin, his Purifying Shampoo on greasy-hair days, the Lavender & Rosemary Shampoo by John Masters Organics and, of course, the Honey Shampoo by Leonor Greyl, as well as his Bain TS Shampoo! I haven’t found anything better yet!
Her "guilty pleasure"!
I do a lot of yoga, so I often end up taking two showers a day, which isn’t very eco-friendly. I’m absolutely mad about body care. My ultimate indulgence: washing with Moroccan Rose Shower Gel by Ren Skincare, then exfoliating from the soles of my feet to my neck with their Guérande Salt Body Scrub, and sinking into a bath with oils by Susanne Kaufmann. If I really want the full treatment, I apply the Manicure Kit by Kure Bazaar while the bath is running… and when I get out, I slather on Redefining Body Balm by Tata Harper. It’s the kind of treatment that leaves your skin incredibly soft in just one night.
