How do dark spots develop?
Let’s start with a little biology. To treat dark spots effectively, we need to understand the pigmentation process. At its heart is a cell called the melanocyte, which produces melanin, the skin’s protective pigment. Located among other cells in the deepest layer of the epidermis, the melanocyte creates melanin, which is then distributed to cells to give them their colour. This is called melanogenesis.
Melanin sits at the heart of cells like a parasol, providing protection. When skin is exposed to UV rays, the melanocyte responds: it grows, multiplies and produces more melanin.
That’s when everything is working as it should. Unfortunately, the melanocyte is also an extremely delicate cell that can overreact to the slightest disturbance. Significant stress, hormones, inflammation, UV rays and even certain fragrances can trigger a surge in free radicals and disrupt how it works. The result: this disruption causes melanin to be produced unevenly, leading to the appearance of dark spots.
