Dry skin
For as long as you can remember (or almost), your skin has felt tight… Feeling comfortable in your skin has never been easy. It constantly seems short of oils: it literally drinks up the serums and creams you apply in no time. The fact is, dryness is an inherent characteristic of your skin. But it doesn’t have to stay that way… With the right products, even very dry skin can feel comfortable and look radiant again.
My skin concern
dry skin
What is dry skin?
This skin is economical with its resources: it works more slowly and does not produce enough oils to keep it comfortable and supple. Its hydrolipidic film is absent or impaired, and without that protection, this skin type can easily become dehydrated (because it can no longer retain water). Dry skin can therefore easily become dehydrated, leaving it short of water as well as oils. It can also become very sensitive, again because its surface barrier is in poor condition and the bonds between skin cells are weakened.
How can you recognise it?
-
My skin feels uncomfortable. It feels tight all the time, and dry, flaky patches are a daily occurrence in winter.
-
I’m starting to notice signs of sensitivity (redness, tingling and tightness) in delicate areas, such as my cheekbones.
-
My complexion looks dull and lacks radiance.
-
My skin doesn’t feel soft; it feels rough, and my pores are almost invisible.
-
I have a few fine lines that are starting to become more noticeable.
What causes dry skin?
This discomfort can have a number of causes:
- External stressors such as cold, wind and pollution (particularly free radicals) weaken the epidermis.
-
But an unsuitable routine can also cause these problems. For example, over-exfoliating (with a physical scrub or an overly strong professional peel) or using a toner that is too astringent or irritating can dry out the skin and, in turn, lead to dehydration.
-
In addition, natural ageing is an inevitable factor that can make skin drier. Over the years, collagen and elastin fibres and hyaluronic acid become less abundant. The epidermis loses substance, becoming thinner and more fragile.
-
Finally, a diet lacking in vitamin A, trace elements and fatty acids can negatively affect the skin’s natural beauty.
What can you do about dry skin?
A few good habits can quickly help address the concerns of very dry skin. Follow our 3 essential steps to help your skin feel healthy and comfortable again, without that tight feeling!
My 3 Essential Steps
Dry skin
My double cleanse
First my cleansing oil or balm, then my cleansing milk or gel
Make-up Removing Oils and Balms
Double cleansing is ideal for every skin type: it is the most effective and gentlest way to cleanse. As a bonus, it is also a valuable ally against skin ageing. Well-cleansed skin is better oxygenated and gets the most from your skincare routine.
First, I start with a cleansing oil or balm: this first product begins to soften and nourish the skin by providing the fatty acids it needs to feel comfortable. It also removes every trace of makeup (even waterproof mascara!) without irritation.
- If I’m new to double cleansing, I choose the Make-up Removing Oil by Oh My Cream Skincare, a lightweight oil that rinses off easily.
- If I want a 100% green balm, No1 Purity Facial Cleansing Balm by Ren Skincare is the perfect choice.
- For a richer, more nourishing texture for skin that’s particularly lacking in oils, I treat myself to the Nourishing Oil Cleanser by Tata Harper.
Cleansing milks and gels
As a second step, follow the oil or balm with a gentle cleansing cream or milk to refine the results and cleanse the face thoroughly. These nourishing, comforting formulas cleanse effectively without being harsh on the skin.
- If I’m looking for a reliable, comforting staple, I choose the Cleansing Emulsion by Oh My Cream Skincare.
- If my skin is really struggling and I want an even creamier texture, I turn to Grace Gentle Cleansing Cream by Antipodes.
-
And if my dry skin also feels particularly sensitive, I choose the ultra-creamy, soothing texture of Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser by Pai Skincare.

Gentle exfoliation
Exfoliation isn’t just for normal skin! By removing excess dead skin cells, I help nourishing ingredients absorb better. This second step helps soften the skin and makes the skincare products applied afterwards more effective. I avoid coarse-grained scrubs, which are too harsh and could irritate my skin or leave it feeling hot. For soft, comfortable skin, I choose a face exfoliator that suits my skin type.
- I can opt for a gentle powder exfoliant that emulsifies with water, such as the Exfoliating Powder from Oh My Cream Skincare .
- I can choose an exfoliant to leave on like a peeling mask such as the Resurfacing Mask by Tata Harper. Its gentle enzymes lift away dead skin cells to boost radiance.
- Want a more noticeable boost? The Renaissance Mask Resurfacing Mask by Oskia combines fruit acids and prebiotics to exfoliate while protecting the skin’s surface barrier.
Facial oil
Finally, I finish my routine by protecting my skin with a facial oil for dry skin. A facial oil, used as a serum or on its own, is the ultimate restorative step for dry skin. Rich in essential fatty acids and nutrients, it brings comfort and nourishment while leaving a lovely, glowy veil on the skin.
- To help repair my skin overnight, I treat myself to Cell Repair Night Oil by Aurelia Probiotic. Its probiotics are a real plus for helping restore balance to a disrupted hydrolipidic film.
-
For a slightly richer texture that brightens my complexion, I choose Rose O12 Hydrating Defence Serum by Ren Skincare.
- If I’m looking for a certified organic, aromatic and anti-ageing option, I treat myself to Mon Huilette Day by Les Huilettes. Its blend of argan oil, carrot oil and essential oils helps revive even the driest skin.
Our beauty tips for preventing dry skin

The DOs & DON’Ts
The DOs
-
Mix a few drops of oil-based serum into your moisturiser to help restore the skin’s protective barrier.
-
Apply a day cream with SPF every day, especially when spending time in the sun. The skin’s hydrolipidic film also offers a little protection against UV rays; without it, that protection is lost.
-
Choose deeply nourishing night treatments to replenish the skin’s oils and indirectly support its hydration too. Take time to massage them in to stimulate the sebaceous glands, which produce sebum. Soft skin after a few nights’ sleep!
The DON’Ts
-
Avoid foaming cleansers packed with irritating surfactants that can dry out the skin and make discomfort worse. Choose gentle, soap-free cleansers instead, preferably with a milky or creamy texture.
-
Avoid showers that are too hot, as they can strip away the skin’s hydrolipidic barrier and dry it out even more! Remember to apply body lotion after every shower, too.
-
Avoid dry air, air conditioning, heating and pollution ; environmental stressors can have a real impact on the skin’s lipids.
-
Avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water.
