Because it adds a healthy glow, sculpts the face and can transform your look all on its own, blush is essential for a flawless complexion, whatever your skin tone or type. Powder or cream: discover our beauty tips for getting it right and applying it like a pro!

Our guide to choosing the right colour

  • I have fair skin and/or blonde hair: PurePressed Blush in Awake by Jane Iredale, a rosy blush that looks like you’ve just been for a walk in the fresh air.

  • I have warm-toned skin and/or brunette hair: Volumizing Lip And Cheek Tint in Very Popular by Tata Harper, a soft brick shade towarm up the complexion.

  • I have dark skin: Cream Blush  Cream in Above and Beyond by Kjaer Weis, a gorgeous poppy-red shade for an instant lift!

  • My skin flushes easily or is prone to rosacea: Cream Blush in Precious by Kjaer Weis, an orangey peach that balances out red undertones in the skin (also ideal if you have blemishes).

  • … or, for a safe choice, a universally flattering coral: Lip2Cheek in Smile by RMS Beauty for a guaranteed healthy glow.

How to apply blush

1. Pick up the product
If you’re using powder blush: use a natural- or synthetic-bristle powder brush and tap it gently to remove any excess powder.
If you’re using cream blush: a synthetic-bristle brush is best, or you can apply it with your fingers.

2. Apply
Avoid applying it too close to the nose. Instead, follow an “imaginary line” that stays beyond the corners of your mouth.

3. Blend out
Blend the product from the cheekbone outwards using small circular motions. This avoids harsh horizontal lines or the “doll cheeks” effect you can get when the product isn’t blended enough.

What not to do

  • Too much product: been a little heavy-handed? Don’t panic — you can fix it. Spritz on a little floral water, then pat with a tissue. Alternatively, a little loose powder swept over your cheekbones works well too.

  • The wrong colour: it could have the opposite effect and make your complexion look dull… or unnatural. Worried about getting it wrong? Choose a coral or dusty rose shade, a safe bet for any skin tone.

  • Rushed base makeup: Whether you use foundation, pressed powder or tinted moisturiser, blush is a finishing touch that looks much better when you’ve evened out your complexion first. Remember to conceal small spots or dark spots with concealer, too.

A few more tips…

  • You can also use your blush as eyeshadow, applying it only to the eyelid. An orange shade, for example, will bring warmth to blue eyes. Add a touch of mascara and you’re done!

  • Run out of blush? Lipstick can do the trick too.

  • Add a hint of highlighter to the tops of your cheeks for that coveted glow — the finishing touch!

  • The difference between bronzer and blush? Bronzer is swept over the high points of the face (chin, forehead…) to add radiance wherever the sun naturally tans your skin.
